Forget About Perfection

This is something I want to get out of the way right at the start, before I get into all the other content I could possibly discuss.

So, perfection. Is it good or bad? The title may be a bit misleading but you’ll understand what I mean after you finish reading.

When you visualise your goals/dreams, I am almost certain that you consider the most perfect scenario, where you are able to execute your plan perfectly, without flaw and everything just falls into place. I have no issues with this and probably agree that it is the only way you should visualise your goals and dreams.

Although, I want to look at this from a slightly different viewpoint. I think the concept of perfection ruins our ability to take action. We can always make excuses as to why we don’t perform a certain task.

  • I’m not ready yet. I don’t know what I’m doing.
  • I need to study more first.
  • If I wait till tomorrow, I can do this instead.
  • I’ll go for that jog later after I buy my ____.
Perfection breeds inaction. I guess you get the idea. Even if you may be doing a particular task wrong it doesn’t matter. I’m not saying you go out there and try to purposely do something wrong, all I’m saying is go out there and JUST DO IT (Nike has it right). Aim for perfection in the task but never wait to start it. You’ll never be 100% ready.

I have experienced this first hand. For a long time, I have thought about the different content I could publish on this site and how I could provide high value information. I had all these ideas, however I was always waiting for the perfect time to start writing that post or making this modification etc.

Well, what happened? Nothing. I didn’t do anything and was just wasting time for no reason.

Look, I am the kind of person that wants to do something absolutely perfectly before putting it out there. However, I have come to learn that it is best to avoid such a situation and just take action and make some changes right now. Sure it may not be great at first, but eventually, those initial steps will just compound and you’ll get to the highest standard possible.

I’ve had some projects I’ve worked on before and I have released products which I thought were absolutely flawless (and where I gave all my effort and energy), and the results were mediocre. Conversely, I’ve had some products with which I was not fully satisfied however they were extremely popular.

So, I’m not going to sit here and say to you that everything you read on this site will be absolutely perfect. I’ve learnt my lesson. However, I can guarantee there will be a continuous improvement.

I’m not going to delay taking any action, but if I find any mistakes or find new information that could be beneficial, it’ll come back onto the site. I am still striving for perfection, but I’m not going to wait for everything to be perfect. It’s a gradual process. There is always room for improvement and adjustments. The quality can only get better from here on in.

Remember,

Every action has result.

Once you make a decision or have an idea, just go do it. You’ll figure out the best way to make it happen. Go for that run. Hit another 60 balls in the nets. Finish that assignment. Start up your business. Don’t leave things for later on. Do them now. Every little thing adds up in the end.

Aim for perfection but don’t let it stop you from taking action now.
