Mike Young, the Australian Fielding coach mentioned a few areas that could be focused on to improve your fielding. Below you can find a few key points that will definitely improve your fielding.
Firstly, when fielding and picking up, the pickup should ideally involve the fingers being placed across the seam. The three fingers that are holding onto the ball should form a triangle.
It is important to maintain balance and the correct direction towards your target. This is done by throwing with your feet. A few steps with your feet in the direction of the target will generate greater speed and accuracy as opposed to a flat footed throw, where the arm is caused to generate the pace.
So now, you’ve picked up the ball and are ready to throw it. There are two aspects to good fielding, Vision and Balance.
When picking up the ball, make sure you always have your thumbs facing down, this means when you wind up to release the ball, it is in good position for you to release it as soon as possible without having to re-adjust. Remember, as I mentioned right at the start of the article, the three fingers holding onto the ball should form a triangle shape.
Now, make sure you throw low, that is aiming for the base of your target. This will extend your reach and generate good arm path. This is especially helpful when you are fielding within the 30-yard circle and are trying to create run-out opportunities.
When moving about the field, always make sure you are generating a straight line with the target. Keep your momentum going in a straight line. This will improve the effectiveness of your pick up and improve the speed at which you are able to return the ball.
By following some of these tips, your fielding will most likely improve. Fielding is a crucial aspect to becoming a class cricketer and it is important to practice these skills whenever possible. Repetition will create some good habits that will transform you into an elite fielder.
